Dubai Police has seized 23 vehicles after drivers deliberately obscured or tampered with their license plates to evade detection by police devices or traffic cameras, in a bid to avoid traffic violations.
Director of the General Department of Traffic at Dubai Police, Major General Saif Muhair Al Mazrouei, emphasised that Dubai Police employs advanced innovative technologies and a highly-skilled team capable of detecting attempts to conceal or tamper with license plates.
He added that Dubai Police keeps an eye on both internal and external roads to address these violations. Al Mazrouei stated, “We have observed drivers using chemical substances to obscure their license plates, while others have bent their plates or applied stickers that hinder identification. We emphasised that such actions are traffic violations subject to legal penalties.”
Additionally, he mentioned the arrest of a young man featured in a viral social media video who was deliberately removing his vehicle's license plate while committing serious traffic offenses, including running a red light and speeding over 190 km/h. “This individual was also engaged in reckless behaviour and performing dangerous stunts on the road.” Al Mazrouei continued, “Another driver was apprehended using a chemical spray to obscure part of their license plate, making it appear to have double digits.”
The Director of the General Department of Traffic confirmed that the vehicles have been impounded under Decree No. 30 of 2023 concerning vehicle impoundment, which can impose a fine of up to AED 50,000 for their release.
