Sharjah Ruler issues law regulating drone operations

His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, has issued a new law regulating the use of drones.

The law applies to all types of drones and covers all areas of the emirate of Sharjah, including free zones and special development zones, for both public and private sector users.

It excludes military and security drones, as well as any other exemptions approved by the Chairman of the Sharjah Department of Civil Aviation.

The legislation aims to enhance air safety and security, regulate drone operations in line with international standards, reduce operational risks, and support the safe and efficient use of airspace.

It also seeks to boost innovation in the drone sector and support research, startups and national talent.

Under the law, the Sharjah Department of Civil Aviation, working with the General Civil Aviation Authority, will be responsible for issuing permits, licensing operators, defining flight zones and overseeing compliance with safety regulations.

Prior approval will be required for all drone activities in the emirate, including government, commercial, scientific, research and recreational use.

Drone owners must also register their aircraft before operation, and ensure they are clearly identified with approved markings.

The law further sets out rules governing drone operations, safety systems, approved flight areas and pilot licensing, and establishes penalties and security measures in coordination with Sharjah Police.

Officials say the framework is designed to ensure safe skies over Sharjah while enabling the responsible growth of the drone sector and strengthening the emirate’s position as a regional hub for advanced aviation technology.
