The Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure has announced the start of construction on the Emirates Road enhancement project, a AED 750 million development aimed at easing congestion and boosting connectivity across the northern Emirates.
The two-year project will expand the road from three to five lanes in each direction over a 25 km stretch between Al Badee Interchange and Umm Al Quwain, increasing capacity by 65 per cent to accommodate around 9,000 vehicles per hour.
Interchange No. 7 will also be redeveloped, with six new bridges and service roads increasing traffic flow to over 13,000 vehicles per hour.
Once completed, the upgrade is expected to cut travel times by up to 45 per cent for commuters coming from Ras Al Khaimah, passing through Umm Al Quwain and Sharjah, and reaching Dubai — and vice versa.
The Ministry says the project will support trade, reduce emissions and help meet the UAE’s goals for a smart and sustainable transport network.
Carefully phased construction plans are in place to minimize disruption, with detours and traffic coordination already being implemented.
